Let's Talk Recycling...
Don't you hate windy days when you put your paper recycling out and it ends up blowing all over the neighbourhood? We sure do...
The staff at the Region had an idea... It started with digging up a landfill site in Blackstock and taking all of the discarded tires and created a lid from those tires that fits on you recycling containers. They are lightweight, easy to use and do not blow away.
We ran a pilot program in 2019 in Ward 1, every home in a targeted area received a new blue box with the lids and the results were very favourable. The pilot was called #putalidonit, there were a few tweaks that needed to be made.
In June 2019, I moved a motion at the Region that was supported unanimously that as part of 2020 budget process that staff would commence to secure sponsorship (naming rights) to go directly on the lids to reduce the cost to the residents, to investigate creating a bylaw that all residents must use this lid. Staff will also be securing a patent, as we believe this product will be the envy of our neighbouring regions, this would be an opportunity to sell this product to them.
