Where were all the election signs??

Great question!!

You may have noticed in the recent federal election that all of the municipalities in Durham Region had federal candidate election signs along the main roads, including both local and regional roadways ... except for the Town of Ajax.

Well in 2019, the newly elected Town Council amended Ajax's sign bylaw to NOT allow election signs on our local roads like Church Street, Harwood Avenue, or Rossland Road. Shortly afterward, Durham Region amended their election sign bylaw to align with the Town of Ajax. This means that election signs are not allowed to be placed on regional roads like Westney Road, Bayly Road, Salem Road or Taunton Road either.

So where can you place election signs?

The only place where election signs are permitted is on residential property. This applies to all Federal, Provincial as well as Municipal electoral candidates and their signs.

This means we will no longer have the hazardous clusters of election signs along our roadways. You may remember the unsightly mess of signs from previous elections. It was not unheard of strong winds blowing election signs into the street or the placement of the signs themselves often blocked sight lines and hid pedestrians at major intersections -- all dangerous situations.

Aside from keeping our thoroughfares free of mess and the potential dangers of election signs, the Town of Ajax's sign by-law is a green initiative: Fewer election signs means less waste diverted to the landfills and that leads to a greener tomorrow.

So, THAT'S what happened to the election signs in Ajax!
