Vision Zero: Automatic Speed Enforcement March 2022 Update

It has been my privilege to have been a part of the Vision Zero initiative at the Region of Durham for the past three years.

The main objective of Vision Zero is to reduce fatal and injury collisions by 10% within 5 years (2019-2023). One of the main accomplishments has been the introduction of Automatic Speed Enforcement ("ASE") and Red Light Cameras ("RLC"). I thought I would give you an update on the ASE and RLC program.

Automatic Speed Enforcement stats 2020 - present:

Total incidents - 121,137

Total Charges - 61,423 (51% charge rate)

Ajax, has only one ASE (Regional) camera on Bayly:

Total incidents - 1,013

Total charges - 637

Durham Region only has 4 ASE cameras that are moved around every 8 weeks, the locations of these camera are posted on the website https://www.durham.ca/en/living-here/automated-speed-enforcement.aspx

We are in the process of purchasing 4 permanent ASE cameras, which will be mounted on poles, one of those locations will be on Bayly, in front of Ajax High School.

Red Light Camera stats 2020 - present:

Total Incident - 4,345

Total Charges - 3,221 (74% charge rate)

Ajax has 3 of these RLC cameras:

Westney and Magill

Total incident - 1,122

Total charges - 848

Salem and Bayly

Total incident - 89

Total charges - 53

Lakeridge and Taunton

Total incident - 76

Total charges - 46

You might wonder what the difference is between incidents vs charges; as we are all aware with the 2020 pandemic the courts and the reporting centers were closed therefore the tickets issued were not charged.
